"The Rack" is the crushing debut full-length album by Dutch death-doom legends Asphyx, presented here in the classic CD format by Century Media. Originally emerging in the early 1990s underground, this record is celebrated for its relentless, downtuned riffing, cavernous vocals and a suffocating atmosphere that fuses old-school death metal brutality with bleak, doom-laden tempos. Tracks build from ominous, slow passages into explosive assaults, capturing the raw, uncompromising sound that made Asphyx a cult name among extreme metal fans.
The album's songwriting focuses on dark, apocalyptic themes, war, decay and human suffering, underlined by crushing guitar walls and a grim, organic production that preserves the authenticity of the early death metal era. "The Rack" is widely regarded as one of the band's most essential releases and a key reference point for fans of old-school death and death-doom, appealing both to longtime followers and to listeners discovering Asphyx's uncompromising style for the first time.
Asphyx formed in the late 1980s and quickly became one of the leading names in European death-doom. Over the years, they have built a loyal international fan base with a series of respected albums and a reputation for powerful, no-frills live performances. Their work has influenced countless younger bands in the extreme metal scene and solidified their status as enduring veterans of the genre.
The CD edition by Century Media underscores the label's long-standing role as one of the most important institutions in heavy music. Known for supporting groundbreaking metal and hard rock artists worldwide, Century Media has helped bring many underground acts to a broader audience while maintaining a strong connection to the scene's roots. With "The Rack" on CD, listeners receive a durable, collectible format that preserves this landmark album in a way that honors its raw energy and historic significance within death metal.
Not a bad debut by one of the best death metal bands from the Netherlands

An album sounds like a nuclear bomb detonating. Of the early albums - in my opinion this is the strongest, although it was recorded in just a couple of days. Edition with bonuses in the form of live tracks, sounding no less interesting than the original recording. I prefer the anniversary re-release of the album with a bonus disc with cover versions.

First Asphyx album and it is really great death metal. Without blast beats, just speed, fluid and adrenaline songs. Highly recommended if you like Pestilence.

Raw, classical death metal. Rotation of hard slow melodies with fast riffs always recognizable and became their own attribute.
