Queen Sylvia Embry is best known as the bass-playing vocalist in Lefty Dizz and the Shock Treatment during the late 70s. The group was immensely popular and played some of the best (and wildest) blues music in Chicago. It seemed as if Sylvia was poised to break out as Chicago's leading blues woman as she started to front her own band and recording for three different labels in just a few years. They were married for a time but by the time they recorded this album they had divorced. Recorded on January 19, 1979 by the tiny Razor label the original album, known as After Work, is long out-of-print. This new CD contains previously unissued material.
"Troubles" on CD brings together the soulful blues partnership of guitarist and singer John Embry with vocalist Sylvia, captured in an intimate, club-like atmosphere. The album presents a classic Chicago blues sound: earthy guitar lines, expressive vocal phrasing, and a warm, unpolished production that highlights the emotional core of each song. Listeners can expect slow blues burners, mid-tempo grooves, and gritty, personal lyrics about heartbreak, everyday struggles, and resilience, all delivered with a lived-in authenticity that will appeal to traditional blues fans and newcomers alike. This CD is ideal for anyone who appreciates honest, straightforward blues with strong guitar work and powerful, characterful vocals.

John Embry & Sylvia embody a roots-oriented approach to the blues, with Embry's playing steeped in the Chicago tradition and Sylvia's voice adding a soulful, narrative dimension to the music. Their collaboration emphasizes feel over flash: subtle bends, tasteful fills, and call-and-response between guitar and vocals create a dynamic, engaging listening experience. While not a commercial chart act, they represent the kind of artist Delmark is known for: dedicated musicians who keep the classic blues idiom alive on stage and in the studio.

Delmark is one of the longest-running independent jazz and blues labels in the United States, renowned for its commitment to authentic, artist-driven recordings. Over decades, Delmark has helped document and preserve key strands of Chicago's musical heritage, working closely with influential blues and jazz musicians and issuing both new albums and historically important reissues. The label stands for careful production, respect for each artist's individual style, and a catalogue that appeals to serious collectors as well as casual listeners who want a reliable entry point into genuine blues and jazz sounds. With "Troubles," Delmark once again underlines its role as a curator of enduring, honest music rather than short-lived trends.
