Recorded in concert, the album presents a wide-ranging selection of Karaindrou's most moving themes, many of them known from her celebrated film and theatre scores, in new, concentrated performances. The music unfolds with meditative slowness and emotional clarity, combining elements of contemporary classical, chamber music, and subtle folk inflections into an atmosphere of intimate melancholy and quiet intensity. Sparse orchestrations, lyrical melodic lines and the characteristic balance between silence and sound create a deeply immersive listening experience that rewards focused attention as well as late-night contemplation.
Karaindrou's compositions on "Elegy Of The Uprooting" are distinguished by their strong sense of melody and their ability to convey complex emotions with minimal means. The pieces often build around simple motifs that gradually blossom through delicate instrumental interplay, allowing the listener to experience both fragility and inner strength. The recording captures the nuances of the ensemble with great detail: strings, piano, reeds and other acoustic instruments are given room to breathe, resulting in a sonic picture that is clear, transparent and natural. The album functions both as an entry point into Karaindrou's musical universe and as a rich retrospective for listeners who are already familiar with her work for cinema and theatre.
Eleni Karaindrou is widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary composers for film and stage, known especially for her long-standing collaboration with Greek director Theo Angelopoulos. Her scores are celebrated for their emotional depth and their distinctive, timeless sound world that transcends genre boundaries. Over the years, her music has reached an international audience through critically acclaimed albums and award-winning soundtracks, establishing her as a unique voice in modern composition. With "Elegy Of The Uprooting", she brings key moments of her artistic journey together in a coherent live narrative that underlines her status as a major figure in European music.
The CD is released by ECM Records, a label synonymous with high artistic standards, innovative programming and audiophile sound. Founded in Germany in 1969, ECM has built a reputation for meticulously produced recordings that emphasize clarity, space and musical detail, across jazz, contemporary classical and genre-defying projects. The label is known for its distinctive visual aesthetics and carefully curated catalogue, which has introduced numerous influential artists to an international public. With "Elegy Of The Uprooting", ECM once more demonstrates its commitment to presenting music that is both artistically ambitious and emotionally accessible, in a recording that meets demanding expectations for sound quality and presentation. | | | No. of tracks: |
