Guitar Slim, who originally recorded under his given name of Eddie Jones, was born in 1926 and raised in the heartland of the blues in the Mississippi Delta, where he was a singer and dancer in his teens. He started playing in New Orleans after war service, becoming known for his wild stage act, and using distorted guitar sounds a decade before rock guitarists like Jimi Hendrix. This 30-track CD comprises all his A & B sides during the 1950s, recording for the Imperial, J-B, Specialty and Atco labels until his premature death in 1959. It includes his landmark million-selling R&B No. 1 hit from 1954 "The Things That I Used to Do", which was subsequently listed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll". It's a comprehensive overview of his career, and showcases his distinctive and innovative style, which influenced the likes of Buddy Guy, Albert Collins and Frank Zappa, as well as Hendrix himself, who recorded a version of "The Things That I Used to Do" - it was also later covered by Stevie Ray Vaughan

"The Complete Releases" is a comprehensive CD collection dedicated to the groundbreaking New Orleans blues and R&B guitarist and singer Guitar Slim, released by the reissue specialist label Acrobat. This set brings together his complete releases from his classic recording years, offering a coherent overview of the evolution of his sound: from raw, gospel-tinged blues roots to the high-energy, horn-driven rhythm & blues that made him a cult legend. Characterised by searing electric guitar, emotional, often testifying vocals and a driving band feel, the tracks on this CD demonstrate why Guitar Slim is regarded as a key influence on later blues-rock and soul artists. The compilation is curated to flow like a musical journey, highlighting both his biggest successes and lesser-known gems, and is ideal for dedicated collectors as well as newcomers who want to discover his work in a structured way.

The sound quality benefits from careful remastering of the original sources (within the limitations of the era), preserving the warmth and grit of the vintage recordings while ensuring a consistent listening experience across all titles. Informative booklet notes (where included, depending on edition) typically provide session details, historical context and commentary on important titles, helping to place Guitar Slim's work within the broader development of post-war blues and R&B. As a physical CD edition, "The Complete Releases" appeals to audio enthusiasts who value tangible media, archival completeness and properly sequenced tracklists, offering a focused alternative to fragmented digital playlists.

Guitar Slim (born Eddie Jones) is remembered as one of the most electrifying figures of 1950s New Orleans R&B. His innovative, heavily amplified guitar style, extended solos and show-stopping stage presence paved the way for later guitar heroes in blues, rock and soul. He achieved major chart success in the mid-1950s and left a lasting mark on fellow musicians with his passionate vocal delivery and daring use of distortion and sustain--elements that were ahead of their time and helped define the expressive potential of the electric guitar. Though his recording career was relatively short, the intensity and originality of his work have secured him a permanent place in blues history.

Acrobat is a label known for carefully compiled reissues and anthologies, with a particular focus on jazz, blues, R&B and early popular music. Their releases are typically characterised by thoughtful track selection, attention to discographical detail and historically informed presentation. With "The Complete Releases", Acrobat continues its mission to preserve and make accessible important catalogues from the formative years of modern popular music, providing both seasoned collectors and new listeners with a reliable, well-researched edition of Guitar Slim's recorded legacy.
