This solid album by the saxophonist is a little bit overshadowed by its close contempory "Speak no evil" but this is a great effort. The record was released in the late seventees although it was recorded in 1965. It's hard to believe that this record wasn't released when it was recorded because in my opinion "The Soothsayer" ranks with the best of his works for Blue Note. The album contains five Shorter originals and an arrangement of Jean Sibelius' "Valse Triste". "Lady Day" is a tribute to jazz-singer Billie Holiday. A self-recommending disc.
