| | Description: | October 12th marks the 150th anniversary of the birth in Gloucestershire, England, of Ralph Vaughan Williams. A defining figure in British music, he is often perceived in terms of pastoral lyricism, but his works also reflect the upheavals and traumas of the 20th century. Central to his philosophy was the idea that true â??national musicâ??, as he called it, could not be narrow or xenophobic. He believed that composers became most fully and universally human by exploring their cultural roots.
This 30-CD set, to be released on September 30th, reflects the full breadth of Vaughan Williamsâ?? musical achievement, encompassing symphonic music, concertos, operas, choral and vocal works (including arrangements of folk songs) and chamber music.
