These are the components that you look for in ANY recording and they're all available in abundance on That's What's Up by the Heavy Hitters. - For many jazz listeners, it is exactly this: the capturing of real feelings and deep emotive performances that often makes live recordings such as this so special. For Mike LeDonne some of his favorite jazz recordings were recorded live. The playing is dependably great, of course, but there is a "lightning in a bottle" quality to many of these sides that manifest as new discoveries are made with every subsequent listen. - This recording was made at the end of a 2 week tour that ended up at one of the world's finest jazz clubs- Frankies. It was also my good friend and co-producer Cory Weeds' 50th birthday celebration. Full line up: Mike LeDonne on piano, Eric Alexander on tenor saxophone, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Vincent Herring on alto saxophone, Alexander Claffy on bass, Kenny Washington on drums.Recorded at Frankie's Jazz Club in Vancouver, BC on December 15th, 16th & 17th, 2023."That's What's Up" is a dynamic CD release by Heavy Hitters that captures the energy, spontaneity, and interplay of a modern jazz ensemble in full flight. Across the album, the group explores groove-driven pieces, swinging up-tempos, and more contemplative, harmonically rich tunes, always rooted in strong melodies and sophisticated improvisation. The production focuses on clarity and warmth, allowing every instrument to breathe and giving the listener the feel of being right in the club or studio. This makes "That's What's Up" equally appealing to dedicated jazz aficionados and curious newcomers who value organic, live-sounding recordings.
Heavy Hitters stand for tight ensemble work, expressive solos, and a deep connection to the jazz tradition, while still sounding contemporary and fresh. Their playing emphasizes interaction: lines are tossed between horns and rhythm section, grooves shift subtly, and solos grow naturally out of the group's collective sound. The result is a recording that invites repeated listening, revealing new details in the arrangements and improvisations each time.
The CD format underscores the album's character as a focused, cohesive listening experience. With its carefully sequenced tracks and detailed liner notes (where available), "That's What's Up" is conceived as an album to be heard from start to finish, highlighting the narrative arc and musical logic of the program rather than just single tracks.
The release comes from Cellar Live, a respected independent jazz label known for high-quality recordings and a strong commitment to acoustic jazz. Based on a philosophy of documenting vivid, honest performances rather than over-produced studio constructs, Cellar Live has built a reputation among jazz fans for excellent sound, tasteful artwork, and a catalog that champions both established and emerging artists. Their focus on capturing the immediacy of live performance and genuine musical communication makes them an ideal home for a project like "That's What's Up," where authenticity, musicality, and artistic integrity are at the forefront. | | | No. of tracks: |
