- INCL. 4 BONUS TRACKS"Murmur," an album with a sound that was new at the time, and characterized the quieter, introverted side of the first wave of alternative rock. R.E.M. developed a strangely subdued variation of their trademark sound for their full-length debut album, one that sounds uncannily eternal and as if it has existed forever. Whether it's the measured riffs of "Pilgrimage," the melancholic "Talk About the Passion," or the winding guitars and pianos of "Perfect Circle." The individuality lies in the atmospheric production, which radiates a detached sense of mystery, but it also comes from the bizarrely talented songwriting. The spidery guitar lines on "Catapult," performed with a charmingly punky weirdness and slightly sinister melancholy, seem to suggest that things in the past were not as simple or innocent as they seemed. Listening to this album is downright life affirming! This 1992 BIEM/STEMRA CD is almost identical to the other 1992 BIEM/STEMRA CD, but this variant has the price code of D: 564.

Originally released in 1983, this record marked a turning point in alternative rock: shimmering, jangly guitars, Michael Stipe's enigmatic vocals and lyrics, and an atmospheric, college-rock sound that shaped an entire generation. Tracks such as "Radio Free Europe" and "Pilgrimage" combine melodic hooks with a mysterious, almost dreamlike production, making "Murmur" a deeply immersive listening experience from start to finish. The CD format brings out the album's layered arrangements with clarity and warmth, ideal for both new listeners and long-time fans who want to rediscover this cornerstone of indie rock.
R.E.M. are one of the most influential alternative rock bands of the late 20th century, known for their distinctive guitar sound, poetic lyrics, and enduring impact on the music landscape. Formed in Athens, Georgia, they were key pioneers of college rock and helped bridge the gap between underground music and the mainstream. Over the course of their career they achieved global success with albums such as "Out of Time" and "Automatic for the People" and have been widely praised for their artistic integrity and evolving sound. "Murmur" captures the band at a formative, inspired moment that would lay the foundation for their later worldwide recognition.
The CD edition by EMI underscores the label's longstanding reputation for high production standards and careful catalog curation. EMI has a long history of working with important and genre-defining artists, and its involvement here highlights the enduring relevance of "Murmur" as a key title in the alternative rock canon. With its well-balanced sound and durable presentation, this EMI CD release is a compelling choice for collectors and anyone wishing to explore the early days of R.E.M.'s influential career. | | | No. of tracks: |
