Description:
Here is the digitally remastered and expanded edition of the eccentric British Punk popstar's 1982 debut solo album featuring six bonus tracks including one previously unreleased track from the Captain's own archives. Captain Sensible was a founding member of legendary Punk band the Damned. Whilst still a member of the Damned, he signed a solo deal with A&M Records. In June 1982, he reached #1 in the UK with a cover of Roger's and Hammerstein's 'Happy Talk' from the musical South Pacific (included here). The album also includes the follow up hit singles 'Wot' and 'Croydon'. Cherry Red. 2009.
"Women And Captains First (Expanded)" is an extended CD edition of Captain Sensible's cult solo debut, originally known for its eccentric mix of punk attitude, melodic pop and off-kilter British humour. This expanded version, released by Cherry Red Records, typically adds bonus material such as single edits, B-sides, or rare tracks, giving fans a deeper insight into the creative phase that followed Captain Sensible's breakthrough with The Damned. Expect catchy hooks, playful arrangements and lyrics that oscillate between social observation and absurd comedy, all wrapped in a sound that bridges early 80s new wave, post-punk energy and classic pop sensibility. The CD format underlines the archival character of this edition and is aimed both at collectors and new listeners interested in a key chapter of UK alternative pop history.
Captain Sensible, best known as guitarist and co-founder of the influential punk band The Damned, used his solo work to explore a broader musical palette far beyond pure punk. With hits like "Wot" and his celebrated cover of "Happy Talk", he became an unlikely pop star and proved that former punk radicals could also conquer the charts. His trademark mix of sharp wit, flamboyant image and genuine songwriting craft made him an enduring figure in British music. "Women And Captains First" captures him at a creative peak, combining chart-friendly tunes with the anarchic spirit that first made him famous.
Cherry Red Records is a long-established independent UK label renowned for its lovingly compiled reissues, archive releases and in-depth expanded editions. The company is particularly respected for its detailed booklets, carefully remastered audio and historically informed track selections that preserve and contextualize key moments of pop and alternative music. By issuing "Women And Captains First (Expanded)", Cherry Red once again underlines its role as a curator of classic albums that might otherwise be overlooked, presenting Captain Sensible's work with the care and attention it deserves for both long-time fans and curious newcomers.
Debut solo album from the co-founder of punk rock band The Damned. Not punk but very interesting new wave full of irony and sarcasm. A very high quality re-mastered edition by Cherry Red, six bonuses. Highly recommended!
